What is the Best Web Hosting for Small Businesses in Nigeria?

If you’re a small business owner looking to create a website for your business here in Nigeria, you must be careful in selecting the hosting company that hosts your website.

A slow loading, or frequently offline website, can have a serious negative impact on your business. You can miss a lot of business opportunities and goodwill if your business website is often slow or unavailable.

For one, Google detests slow loading websites, let alone frequently down and offline ones. This means less traffic for your business if your website is slow, or often down.

That’s why you need a good hosting provider that guarantees a good load speed, excellent uptime, and security of your website from hackers.

So, to avoid necessary stress and headache with the hosting of your small or mid-sized business website, I recommend the following hosting providers:

1. Hostinger Shared Hosting

Hostinger Shared Hosting is one of the cheapest out there. But don’t be deceived, being cheap doesn’t mean their hosting services are poor.

In fact, they are amongst the fastest in terms of load speed in the industry and guarantees excellent uptime and tight security as well.

You also get 1 free domain (from Premium plan and above), free SSL certificate, enough storage and bandwidth, plus speedy 24/7 customer support.

What is the Best Cheap Web Hosting in Nigeria?

Are you running on a tight budget? If your answer is yes, please listen to me before you make a very costly mistake.

Please, don’t ever settle for a less than satisfactory Nigerian web hosting company just because you have a tight budget.

I hate to say this, but most (if not all) local web hosting providers are quite unsatisfactory, to say the least.

I have been a web designer for over 7 years now, so I know what I’m saying.

Rather than patronise any of the “cheap” Nigerian web hosting companies who are hell-bent on frustrating the daylight out of their customers, I suggest you heed my advice for once.

For your peace of mind and satisfaction, I recommend you pick any of the affordable internationally recognised web hosting providers below:

1. Hostinger Single Shared Plan

Hostinger Single Shared Plan is very affordable, yet powerful enough to host your small or mid-sized website effortlessly.

The Single Shared plan starts at $1.39/month for 48 months term. That means you can grab a whole 4 years of access for less than $67 right now.

What is the Best Local Web Hosting in Nigeria?

There are many Nigerian web hosting companies claiming to offer web hosting services to Nigerians at affordable prices.

But watch it…

There is a catch… a big catch!

I hate to say this, but most (if not all) Nigerian web hosting providers are quite unsatisfactory, to say the least.

Of course, their prices can be cheap… but what about their services?

Very slow site speed (the major problem), poor uptime, pitiable server security measures (your site can be hacked very easily), and clueless poor customer support are all you get with most local web hosts.

Most Nigerian web hosts usually start good, but out of greed and poor management, they go to the dogs very fast.

What usually happens is that the acquired server resources which normally should serve a limited number of websites comfortably will instead be used to serve far too many websites. This results in too many sites fighting over limited server resources.

So, because of the stress and disappointments that come from these Nigerian web hosting providers, I hardly recommend any of them to my clients.

The only Nigerian hosting company I could have recommended is QServers.

But earlier this year, 2021, they suddenly started acting strange and irrational.

They started massively suspending all their customers’ hosting accounts that have even the slightest outdated open-source software.

Because of this, thousands of websites hosted on them were suspended without proper warning. In fact, it was a huge mess that led to the exodus of some customers from their enclave.

So, just like I advise my clients, I will equally caution you to avoid Nigerian web hosting providers as much as possible.

But if at all you must go with the locals for whatever reason, I suggest you try QServers Hosting, and pray they don’t suspend your website out of the blue.

Should I Use Local or International Web Hosting for My Business?

Whether you want to settle for poor hosting services and abysmal support that will lead to poor performance of your website is entirely up to you to decide.

Should I Use Local or International Web Hosting for My Business?

Like I said before now…

Nigerian-based hosting companies can be cheap…but the quality of their services is often cheaper...if you know what I mean.

It’s more like garbage in, garbage out. What you pay for, is invariably what you get.

In this era where Google prefers fast-loading websites for ranking, and the attention span of people online is getting shorter, slow loading website can be the silent killer for your business.

So, my piece of advice for you is this…

Why not spend a little extra (if that's even necessary) and get better international hosting that provides fast load times, excellent uptimes, better server security, and professional support by experienced server admins.

What is Web Hosting?

A website is a collection of publicly accessible, interlinked web pages that share a single domain name. A website is typically a collection of HTML, CSS, text, images, and Javascript files accessible to the public via a web browser.

So, what is web hosting then?

In simple terms, web hosting is the process of renting or buying server space to house a website on the World Wide Web. For a website to be viewable over the internet, content such as HTML, CSS, and images has to be uploaded and housed on a server connected to the internet.

A sever is a computer system that makes it possible for anyone with an internet connection, your website address (domain name), and a web browser to access your website content from anywhere in the world whenever they want.

Web hosting companies, therefore, are companies that specialise in renting or selling their web server spaces to individuals and organisations to enable them to upload and make their websites publicly available on the World Wide Web.

These web hosting providers have different types of web hosting services to cater to the different needs and budgets of their numerous customers.

What are the Different Types of Web Hosting in Nigeria?

In Nigeria, you can access different types of hosting services depending on your needs and budget.

The popular services offered to Nigerians by most web hosting providers include the following:

1. Shared Web Hosting

As the name suggests, this is a type of hosting where multiple websites are hosted on the same server. These websites share server resources such as storage space, RAM, CPU, and bandwidth amongst themselves.

You can liken this type of hosting to a normal face-me-I-face-you apartment building with multiple one or two-room apartments where resources such as toilet(s), bathroom(s), and kitchen are shared among individual tenants in the building.

Shared hosting is usually very cheap and easy to set up, making it the most popular type of hosting here in Nigeria.

This type of hosting is typically suitable for website that doesn’t have extensive need for server resources such as personal websites as well as small or mid-sized business websites.

Any high traffic site like LindaIkejiblog, Nairaland, or Jumia cannot survive on this type of hosting.

2. VPS Hosting

Virtual Private Server (VPS) hosting is a type of hosting that stands between shared web hosting and dedicated hosting. Multiple virtual servers with exclusive resources are created on a physical server.

Unlike dedicated hosting, clients share the physical server resources with a few other users. But unlike shared hosting, clients feel like they’re on a dedicated hosting with exclusive server resources that cannot be affected by the activities of the other users.

One may liken this to an apartment house (flats) where every apartment within the same building has its separate rooms, toilet, bathroom, and kitchen.

This type of hosting is normally more expensive than shared hosting but provides better server resources to host more resource-demanding websites.

VPS hosting can be best for high traffic websites like popular blogs, eCommerce websites, and news websites.

3. Dedicated Hosting

Dedicated hosting is a type of hosting where the entire physical server equipment is rented out to the client. Usually, the client has full control over the server and decides everything from security to the software that runs on it.

This is more like renting a fenced and gated house where you have exclusive control over all the facilities in the entire building.

Dedicated hosting offers more flexibility and control, though, it’s usually more expensive when compared to VPS or Shared hosting.

It's usually needed when more server control is required, or when a website receives a whole lot of traffic.

4. Cloud Hosting

A client once asked me if cloud hosting means hosting a website mysteriously in the sky - funny, right?

Well, cloud hosting is a new type of hosting that involves a network of interconnected physical web servers that provide affordable, scalable, and reliable virtual web infrastructure.

One good side of cloud hosting is that if one web server in the network fails, the other servers automatically carry its load. This means your website won't go off even if one server is out of service.

Another advantage is that it's easily scalable and cost-effective. You can add additional virtual server resources as your website storage or traffic need grows.

What Makes a Good Hosting in Nigeria?

When looking for a good web host for your website in Nigeria, what exactly should you look out for?

It’s important to note that your web host determines, to a great extent, the speed, reliability, and security of your website.

So, what are the features that determine a good web hosting provider?

1. Speed

A good web host should be able to respond very quickly to page requests in your target location and globally too. Google has indicated that site speed is one of the vital signals used by its algorithm to rank pages, especially for mobile. Not only that, a slow-loading website can scare away your website visitors and makes you lose potential businesses.

2. Uptime

Uptime is the percentage measure of the time your website is online. A good web host should reveal their real uptime. You should lookout for a provider that has at least 99.8% uptime.

3. Security

There is nothing more painful than losing your content and all the hard work to hackers. A good web host should have proper security measures in place to mitigate against hack attacks and other exploits as they unveil.

4. Automatic Backups

Site backups is a necessity in case of accidental deletion or corruption of site content or files. A good web host should offer regular automatic backups that can be easily restored in case of unforeseen mishaps.

5. Good Customer Service

This is a deal-breaker for me because I can't work with any provider that won't respond to my request in time. You should lookout for a web hosting provider with responsive, competent, and experienced customer service that is reachable anytime - 24/7.

6. Sizeable Storage and Bandwidth

You need sizeable memory space (storage) to store your website files, data, and contents. Likewise, you need enough data transfer allowance (bandwidth) to fulfill all your website traffic requests. You should pick a web host with enough storage and bandwidth to meet your website's current and nearest future demands.

7. Affordable Pricing

Look for an affordable web hosting provider, e.g., Hostinger, with all the features your website needs. Most Nigerian web hosting providers are cheap but their services are often nothing but trash. Don’t fall into the cheap price trap, it can be very counterproductive to your business.

In Conclusion: Which Web Host is Best in Nigeria?

As a web designer with years of experience, I cannot recommend any Nigeria-based web hosting provider for anyone serious with his website safety and performance, especially now that load speed matters a lot with Google Search Engine ranking.

So, here is a quick rundown of my top 4 web hosting providers for Nigerians:
